Sacramento Valley Organizing Community (SVOC)
The Sacramento Valley Organizing Community (SVOC) was officially begun in 1994 and is now composed of over forty religious congregations and community groups, along with allied labor unions, in the North Central Valley. We are an affiliate of the Industrial Areas Foundation, the largest and oldest network of broad-based community organizations in the United States
SVOC has had numerous successes over the past years, including:
Organizing to get tens of millions of dollars in subsidies and then building nearly three hundred homes that low-income families, were able to purchase.
Graduating seven hundred immigrants from our citizenship and ESL classes, all taught by previous graduates.
Graduating over 300 welfare recipients from our job-training program into jobs that pay a living wage in the hospital industry.
Involving thousands of low-income people in house meetings and large public negotiations with elected and corporate officials.
Organizing successful (independently evaluated) "Get-out-the-vote" operations led by graduates of our citizenship classes.
Development of immigrant worker associations
