The PICO California Project
(Pacific Institute for Community Organization)
The PICO California Project teaches people how to change
systems. Most people respond instinctively to community
concerns and injustices as lone individuals, through
charitable acts. The PICO California Project and its
17 member organizations teach people how to address
problems collectively, and how to work for systemic
solutions to problems. It is this approach that we are
successfully using to address the problems that affect
families in California.
We currently represent 400,000 families in 347 congregations
collectively, and have a presence in over half of the
State Senate and Assembly districts. These families
are low-income to middle-income, working families primarily,
representing the diversity of California. In the Central
Valley, we currently have organizations in Sacramento,
Stockton, Fresno and Modesto working on:
Multi-issue (public
education, health care access, safety, affordable housing,
others)
Faith-based
community organizing, centered on congregations both
urban and rural.
Statewide
policy changes and local community organizing.
